How much does a garden designer cost?

Planting design in north London

We are often asked is how much does a garden designer cost?  As with many things, it is difficult to give a hard and fast answer to this question as the fee charged by your garden designer will depend on a number of factors.

Firstly, are there any particular features which you would like to include in your new garden?  For example would you like a water feature or pergola?  Would you like to create an outdoor kitchen area?  Do you need to create steps from your patio terrace?  These are all questions which we discuss with potential clients at an initial consultation, to ensure that we allow enough time to expertly design the details of your dream garden.

Secondly, your garden designer’s fee may depend on the level of complexity of your garden site; for example, do you have a garden which is sloping or over a number of different levels.  If so, your garden designer will need to include the design of construction details to ensure that your garden is adequately retained and meets all health and safety regulations.

Finally, the fees of your preferred garden designer may depend on their level of expertise, experience and the knowledge they have built up over many years, which will all benefit you when designing your new garden.

So how does a garden designer charge?

Here at Hampstead Garden Design, we break down our design fees into three stages.  Firstly the cost of a site survey, which will provide information which is essential for redesigning your garden.  Secondly our fee for designing the new layout of your garden.  This will include details such as the position and specification of your new patio, any pathways and the placement of your planting beds. And thirdly we can advise you on our fee for designing a new planting scheme for your garden.

You may be wondering whether it is worth paying for a garden designer.  Unsurprisingly, we would say yes to this!  The cost of employing a garden designer will be a small fraction of the cost of building your new garden and may actually save you money by avoiding costly mistakes.  You will ensure that the garden meets all of the practical and aesthetic needs of you and your family for many years to come.

Each garden is unique so do give us a call to discuss the fees for designing your new garden.
